PDRA

The Program for Disabled Radio Amateurs (PDRA) is an initiative within the International Amateur Radio Union Region 1 (IARU-R1) that aims to promote, support, and empower radio amateurs with disabilities. It seeks to ensure that every radio enthusiast regardless of physical, sensory, or cognitive challenges has equal opportunities to enjoy and participate fully in amateur radio activities.

The PDRA program is dedicated to:

  • Encouraging inclusion of disabled radio amateurs in all aspects of amateur radio operations, events, and contests.
  • Providing technical and social support through adapted equipment, accessible communication tools, and community assistance.
  • Raising awareness within national societies about the abilities and contributions of disabled radio operators.
  • Promoting collaboration between IARU member societies to share best practices, organize inclusive on-air events, and facilitate educational activities.
  • Celebrating the achievements of disabled operators who demonstrate resilience, innovation, and commitment to the spirit of amateur radio.

United Nations — International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Each year, on December 3rd, the PDRA program joins the global celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. On this day, amateur radio societies and clubs around the world are encouraged to organize special events, on-air activities, and awareness campaigns highlighting accessibility and inclusion in amateur radio.

Why PDRA Matters

Amateur radio has long been a tool for connection, learning, and community. For many operators living with disabilities, it represents a unique way to overcome barriers and engage in meaningful global communication. PDRA embodies the spirit of amateur radio technical creativity, friendship, and service to others ensuring that no one is left behind.
