In this newest episode the team will present the main topic “JOTA – Scouts in Hamradio”. This time we will introduce you to another fantastic aspect of our common hobby – Jamborees On The Air. Join this newest YOTA Online session and listen to our guests live on the show. Furthermore, we will also have a special prize draw after you solved our new riddle live on the show. WHAT IS YOTA ONLINE?
The Youth Working Group within the IARU Region 1 created a new program called “YOTA online”. In these monthly gatherings we will try to bring the YOTA feeling towards the online community and spread the word that there is youth in ham radio. A YOTA team consisting of active youngsters will present different topics, while answering questions from the community. There will also be a section where different recent YOTA event hosts will be able to present the highlights, while also giving participants the opportunity to share stories. These sessions are also interesting if you want to learn more about organizing such amateur radio events for young people. This will be followed by a Q&A session with the group presenting. At the end of the event we will also do a prize raffle including a little riddle amongst all participants.

COVID-19 situation and YOTA Camps

The position on the COVID pandemic remains serious and unpredictable. Governments everywhere struggle with balancing the health of their economies with the health of their populations. The vaccine roll-out seems likely to take most of this year and even then, the impact of mutant strains of the virus and national quarantine requirements are difficult to predict

IARU Region 1 has a number of in-person events planned for 2021 in the Youth, ARDF and HST areas, as well as the planned Workshop for Member Societies. It is not yet certain whether it will be possible to run these events as scheduled.

IARU Region 1 will adopt the following approach:

Youth events scheduled before end-June will not take place. These events make social distancing difficult and we do not believe it will be possible for them to take place. Other 2021 events will remain in the calendar for the time being. We will review the forecast evolution of the pandemic sufficiently prior to each event and make an announcement about whether it will take place. Generally this will be four months prior to the scheduled date. Those planning to attend should thus have sufficient time to make the necessary bookings and travel arrangements.

IARU Region 1’s intent is to ensure that any events which take place do so in an environment which respects national requirements for pandemic control and which does not place at risk the health and well-being of those participating.

International Kids Day event on Saturday, 2^nd January 2021

Twice a year, ARRL – the American Radio Society – offers an event designed to promote Amateur Radio to the youth as well as share excitement with your family, grandkids, friends, scouts or even to the public. This day can be the first time for youth to experience a real radio QSO, hopefully they get interested in becoming a licensed amateur radio operator.
You could make use of this suggested exchange: Name, age, location, and favorite color.
Be sure to work the same station again if an operator has changed. To draw attention, call “CQ Kids Day”.

When you want to participate in IARU R1 we suggest you to use the following frequencies:

10 Meters: 28.350 to 28.400 MHz
15 Meters: 21.360 to 21.400 MHz
20 Meters: 14.270 to 14.300 MHz
40 Meters: 7.080 to 7.120 MHz
80 Meters: 3.650 to 3.750 MHz

Saturday, 2^nd January 2021 will be the next Kids Day activity. Of course, this one will be a bit different than previous ones. Therefore, we recommend everyone to follow the COVID-19 guidelines in these difficult times. Nevertheless, if you are young, close to a radio and do have an amateur radio license, get on the air and share a picture of your activation via social media and tag @hamyota on Twitter and Facebook, @hamyota_official on Instagram or by email to pr@ham-yota.com until Tuesday, 5^th January 2021 at 2359 UTC.

December YOTA Month activity – DYM 2020

The entire month of December, several youngsters under the age of 26 will become active with YOTA as suffix in the callsign. The idea behind this is to show the amateur radio hobby to youth and to encourage youngsters to be active on the ham radio waves.

Usually you hear YOTA stations on air from our summer and subregional camps throughout the year. This season has been an exception. Due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, nearly all our camps and events had to be cancelled. Therefore, nearly no possibilities were left to hear YOTA stations on the bands.

Hence, we as Team YOTA want to show the world that the youngsters still want and can be active on the bands during this difficult time. Help your local youngsters to get on the air throughout the December YOTA Month following your national health guidelines. Either you are a supporting elmer or under 26 years yourself, contact your society’s youth coordinator to be active with your national YOTA callsign. If your society did not apply for one yet, feel free to encourage them to do so of course. It will be a pleasure to work a lot of new youngsters on the bands!

Every ham radio operator can support the youth worldwide! By making a QSO with them, they can improve their skills on air and learn more about geography and ham radio abbreviations among others. The youngsters will be happy to get some attention and exchange information. Licensed and unlicensed youth will be making QSOs, be aware this could be their first radio contact ever and give them a chance to experience a possible new hobby.

As every year, there is again an award program available. Work as many YOTA stations on as many bands and modes as possible and be eligible for your Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum award for free. This program promotes the radio activity on the air waves and shows that there is and will be activity in the future. Last year we had high hopes with the QSO goal of 100.000 QSOs. With the help of youngsters within amateur radio, we absolutely crushed the goal with nearly 130.000 QSOs achieved by 47 stations. This year we are aiming for the same target. So, participate in December YOTA Month, and help us to achieve this goal again in December 2020!
