Call for Articles: Contribute to a New IARU-Sponsored Magazine-Style Website

IARU Region 1 is developing a magazine-style website covering a broad range of technology and STEM-related topics.

The website aims to reach a diverse audience of all ages, those with no technical background who may be interested in the basics, all the way to the experts in a field, not forgetting of course the amateur radio enthusiasts. An extensive list of topics will be hosted, including basic electronics, radio communications, construction projects, communication technologies, 3D printing, and any other fields that align with our mission.

Although this project is initiated by IARU Region 1, it is not limited to Region 1. Participation is open to the worldwide community. You do not need to be a radio amateur to contribute. We value knowledge and goodwill.

This is a great opportunity for authors to showcase their expertise, gain visibility, and connect with like-minded individuals, through a website built by the community, for the community.

Reach out and contribute your content, share your knowledge, and help build a community resource for anyone interested in technology. Republishing existing articles is also welcome.

Even if you are not in a position to contribute content yourself, please share this opportunity with someone who you believe may be willing to. Alternatively, provide us with their contact information so that we can reach out directly.

IARU at HAM RADIO 2025

The International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) is excited to announce its participation at HAM RADIO 2025, set to take place from June 27 to June 29, 2025. This event will bring together amateur radio enthusiasts from around the world, continuing its tradition as one of the most anticipated gatherings in the global amateur radio community.

At HAM RADIO 2025, IARU will once again feature three key zones in hall A1:

  • IARU Main Booth — A central hub for engaging with IARU volunteers
  • IARU Youth Booth — Learn more about our activities and initiatives to support young operators around the world. It will also serve as a meeting point for young radio amateurs to connect and exchange experiences. In addition to the scheduled events, we are also bringing back the traditional Off Air Contest—a fun and engaging challenge where participants simulate contest operations without using any radios. Sounds easy? There’s always a surprise or two, like unexpected SSTV signals or someone tuning up their amplifier! We warmly invite everyone to visit the Youth Booth — whether you’re curious about our work, want to get involved, or just wish to say hello.
  • IARU Innovation Zone — Showcasing the latest technologies, open-source innovations, and open discussions and demos about the future of our hobby. Learn more on what to expect in this press release.

In addition to these booths, IARU is organizing a series of main events on the HAM RADIO stage:

  • Friday, June 27:
    • 12:00 – 12:30: VHF+ Prize Ceremony
    • 13:00 – 14:00: DYM & YOTA Contest Prize Ceremony
  • Saturday, June 28:
    • 15:30 – 16:15: YOTA Flag Ceremony

    • 12:00 – 16:00: Emergency Communications (EMCOMM) – Admin Building, 5th Floor
    • 16:00 – 18:00: International Meeting – Room: Liechtenstein

Wolfgang ‘Wolf’ Hadel, DK2OM, SK

It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to Wolf, who passed away on 17 June 2025 at the age of 79. He was one of the most dedicated and distinguished guardians of the amateur radio frequency spectrum, championing the protection of amateur radio bands with expertise, perseverance and passion for decades.

Wolf was not only an exceptional radio amateur, but also an invaluable member of the international monitoring system. His decades of voluntary work for the DARC, particularly as head of the DARC Band Watch and later as coordinator of the IARU Monitoring Service Region 1, were characterised by his tireless efforts to combat interference, illegal transmissions, and commercial intruders on the frequency bands used by the amateur radio service. Alongside Peter Jost, HB9CET, the deputy coordinator of IARUMS Region 1, who passed away on 3 January 2025, Wolf monitored so-called band intruders and published the IARU Monitoring System’s monthly newsletter.

With technical sensitivity and an almost detective-like intuition, he identified sources of interference, such as over-the-horizon radars, military data links, illegal stations, and poorly suppressed switching power supplies. His well-founded reports were feared not by radio amateurs, but by those responsible for unauthorised transmissions, which he documented and reported with meticulous precision. He stopped numerous international disturbances on his own initiative, often within a few days.

His achievements did not go unnoticed. In 2013, the DARC awarded him the Horkheimer Prize, the association’s highest honour. In 2020, he received the IARU Diamond Award in recognition of his services to the protection of the amateur radio service worldwide. However, awards were never important to him; he was motivated by the ideal of a clean, free frequency spectrum for all radio amateurs.

His educational impact is also particularly noteworthy. Wolf made monitoring easy to understand. Through his presentations, articles and his renowned collection of ‘intruder sounds’, he conveyed his knowledge with great enthusiasm. He was a mentor, role model and point of contact for a whole generation of radio amateurs.

When he retired from active band monitoring at the end of 2019, he left behind a monitoring system that continues to have an international impact – a legacy that will endure. His call sign, DK2OM, will be missed, but his work lives on.

Rest in peace, Wolf. You deserve radio silence.
