IARU Region 1 prepares for Workshop

Delegates attending the forthcoming IARU Region 1 Workshop on the future direction for amateur radio and the associated short Conference sessions will already have received joining instructions.

The “Shaping the Future” event is designed as a highly interactive workshop where small groups of delegates will discuss the goals for amateur radio into the future and how Member Societies and IARU can support progress towards those aims. 

The event is being held virtually, because of continuing COVID issues in many countries. Commenting before the event, IARU Region 1 President Don Beattie, G3BJ, said “We all know that our world is changing in many ways. This event is the opportunity to understand the implications of those changes and map the way ahead for amateur radio, so that IARU and its Member Societies share a common goal and a set of strategies for the future, and to resource action plans to start us on that journey. Holding an interactive workshop event of this scale is a challenge, but with everyone’s help and active contribution I am hoping for a positive and constructive output which will shape our work for years to come”.

Anyone who is planning to attend either the conference or workshop and who has not received joining instructions should contact the Region 1 Secretary urgently.

Bahrain and Kyrgyzstan Join IARU

The IARU member-societies have voted to admit the Bahrain Amateur Radio Society (BARS) and the Amateur Radio Union of the Kyrgyz Republic (ARUKR) to membership. IARU congratulates both ARUKR and BARS and welcomes them and their entire membership.

BARS was founded on 23 July 2020 and is legally registered/recognized to represent the amateurs of Bahrain. As of September there were 15 members out of a total of 88 licensed radio amateurs in the country. 

ARUKR was founded on 25 October 2013 and is legally registered/recognized to represent the amateurs of Kyrgyzstan. As of October 2019 all 110 licensed amateurs in the country were member of ARUKR.

Amendments to the IARU Region 1 Constitution

Following approval by delegates at the Virtual General Conference in October 2020, proposals to amend the Region 1 Constitution were put to a vote of all Member Societies in December 2020. The changes principally covered two areas:

  • Introduction of the facility to hold virtual general conferences, subject to prior agreement of Member Societies
  • Changes to the wording of the Constitution to make it gender-neutral

The voting has now closed. Under Article 7.1 of the Constitution, two-thirds of those Member Societies entitled to vote need to vote in favour for changes to be made to the Constitution. The number entitled to vote is 85 and therefore 57 votes in favour are needed.
The results of the vote, which have been checked and validated by the Chairman of Committee C2 at the VGC, are:

  • For the resolution: 67 votes
  • Against the resolution: 3 votes
  • Abstentions: 1 vote
  • Invalid votes: 1

A total of 72 member societies voted of the 85 possible.

The proposed changes are therefore approved. The revised Constitution has been placed on the Region 1 website at https://​www​.iaru​-r1​.org/​r​e​f​e​r​e​n​c​e​/​r​e​g​i​o​n​a​l​-​c​o​n​s​t​i​t​u​t​i​on/

Workshop programme begins next week

The IARU Region 1 2021 Workshop programme begins next week. Delegates will be gathering virtually on 21 April for the first event in the 2021 workshop programme addressing the future of amateur radio, IARU and its member societies. Over 100 delegates are registered for the event which starts a series of meetings and discussions about future direction.
