SPDX Contest 2022 cancelled

After careful deliberation, the SP DX Contest Committee, together with Polish Amateur Radio Union (PZK) and the SP DX Club, has decided to cancel the 2022 SP DX Contest. 

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Poland has so far taken in more than 2 million refugees. Polish radio amateurs offer Ukrainian refugees accommodation in their homes and their help and services in any way they can. 

Under these exceptional circumstances, the organisers have decided that this year’s SP DX Contest will be cancelled.

Azores Radio Amateurs on standby for seismic activity.

The island of São Jorge in the Azores has suffered over 1800 earthquakes over 48 hours causing concerns and prompting the Regional Government of the Azores to prepare contingency plans to protect the islands population. 

Carlos Nora CT1END, Emergency Communications Co-Ordinator for Portugal reports that a group of nine Radio Amateurs in the towns of Velas and Calheta are working to support emergency communications locally through VHF/UHF repeaters but also long range links back to Portugal on;

80M – 3,750.00 MHz. — 3,760.00 MHz. – LSB (Overnight)
40M – 7,100.00 MHz. — 7,110.00 MHz. – LSB (During the day)
20M – 14,300.00 MHz. USB (For outside region)

This external activity being supported by the Azores DX group and the Portuguese national society REP.

Other radio amateurs are encouraged to listen carefully and avoid causing any QRM to emergency operations on the above frequencies.

23cm band WRC agenda item work continues in CEPT

The 4th meeting of the CEPT project team (CPG PTC) tasked with developing the CEPT Brief for WRC23 agenda item 9.1b on 23cm band amateur service and RNSS coexistence took place during March 2022. The IARU R1 was present and provided a contribution to the working document. A summary report describing the contributions and the meeting activity can be found here.

The meeting did not tackle any technical studies directly but the developing brief reports and summarises the activities taking place in other groups where they are being carried out. Updates were made to the background including a description of the work carried out by the amateur community in CEPT and ITU‑R with respect to resolves 1 of the WRC-19 Resolution 774. Further updates were introduced to describe the study work taking place in ITU‑R (WP’s 4C and 5A).

The draft CEPT Brief will undergo further development as technical studies evolve in the wider regulatory community including both CEPT and ITU‑R. The next activity concerning this topic will take place in the CEPT arena (SE40) to progress the technical studies and the draft ECC Report.

Status Update: HAMCAMP during HAMRADIO 2022

The IARU Region 1 Youth Working Group just got informed by the DARC (German Amateur Radio Society) Youth Department about the status of the annual HAMCAMP during HAMRADIO fair in Friedrichshafen. Lots of worldwide youngsters use this opportunity to have an accomodation directly next to the Messe halls.


They state the following:

“According to current planning by Messe Friedrichshafen, Hamradio will be held this year from June 24 – 26, 2022. Further information can be found at https://​www​.hamradio​-friedrichshafen​.de/

However, HamCamp will not take place this year.

Here, with a heavy heart, we had to make a different consideration than for Hamradio. At HamCamp, over 100 youth and supervisors would be housed in a comparatively small space and a variety of joint activities would take place. Even if there were no longer any legal requirements at this point, we would not be able to implement a hygiene concept that would meet the expected course of the pandemic and achieve sufficient protection for all participants. We also had to take into account that the supervising persons bear a special obligation by fulfilling the duty of supervision for minors.

We did not make this decision lightly, as we were very much looking forward to a HamCamp. We hope for a better situation in 2023!”

However, there is still the possibility to stay at the camping site just next to the fair grounds.
