The IARU Region 1 ATV Contest was held on 13⁄14 June 2020.
Due to travel restrictions in some countries caused by the COVID 19
Pandemic, the main scoring tables have been split into 2 sections.
Section 1 is for entrants who only operated from their home station
address, whereas those operating from alternative addresses or
portable locations entered Section 2.
There were 92 entrants from 8 countries competing, using all bands from 432 MHz to 76 GHz.
The Overall winner of Section 1 for fixed stations was Wim PE1EZU,
while Francesco IK3HHG won Section 2 and had the highest overall
score.
Propagation conditions appeared to be good across Southern
Europe with a number of contacts (even on 3 cm) at over 200 km. The best DX was a 70 cm ATV Contact between F5AGO and F1CSY at 370 km.
Participation was much increased from last year (55 to 92), which is a very welcome sign.

Multi-Operator Contests bring radio amateurs together and so can represent an environment where social distancing can be difficult to achieve. We must recognize that many radio amateurs are in the older, higher-risk age groups. We had hoped that by now, the Covid-19 pandemic would be subsiding, but after improvements over the summer, the opposite now appears to be the case in a number of European countries. Despite this, we know that many Member Societies want to keep the Multi operator class in their National and International contests in 2020.
It is up to the National Member Societies to examine the situation in their own country and to decide if it is appropriate to hold the Multi-operator class in their country. IARU Region 1 will continue to adjudicate Regional multi-operator contests but at all times, contesters must respect their local, regional or national regulations on infection control.
In Corona times the Contest Working Group discussed via mail if it could have been safe and fair to have Multi Operator categories for this June; the advice was that we need to comply with most of the guidelines of our countries.
Therefore this year there will be no Multi-operator categories during the 50⁄70 MHz IARU-R1 contest in June. We know that some countries are less strict than others about social distance and other restrictions. Those kinds of restrictions could be in the advantage of some multi-op stations, and this would not be fair.
We advise all Member Societies to promote this year the Single Operators to participate in this contest.
Take part in the contest next June 20th-21st.
