The IARU member-societies have voted to admit the Bahrain Amateur Radio Society (BARS) and the Amateur Radio Union of the Kyrgyz Republic (ARUKR) to membership. IARU congratulates both ARUKR and BARS and welcomes them and their entire membership.
BARS was founded on 23 July 2020 and is legally registered/recognized to represent the amateurs of Bahrain. As of September there were 15 members out of a total of 88 licensed radio amateurs in the country.
ARUKR was founded on 25 October 2013 and is legally registered/recognized to represent the amateurs of Kyrgyzstan. As of October 2019 all 110 licensed amateurs in the country were member of ARUKR.
IARU continued engagement in the ITU‑R WRC-23 preparations in the CEPTRTO during May 2021 at the third meeting of the Conference Preparatory Group (CPG). The CPG is the parent group in CEPT that oversees the development of the CEPT Briefs for each of the WRC agenda items and reviews the progress in the individual project teams under the CPG umbrella. IARU provided a contribution putting forward the agreed preliminary IARU positions for these agenda items. IARU’s overall objective is to safeguard the allocations to the Amateur and Amateur-Satellite services in the co and adjacent frequency bands within the scope of each agenda item. The CEPT briefs have a specific section in which the views of all the recognised international and regional organisations can be placed and the IARU views are now in this section of the draft briefs for each of the agenda items of interest.

The first YOTA Contest is coming closer and closer already. Only a few days left until Saturday, 22nd May! Is your station ready and tested? Did you install the latest contest loggers to be prepared for the fun on the bands?
Team YOTA has been working hard over the last few months to establish one whole new project for the ham radio community. Everyone can take part, it takes place three times per year and only lasts 12 hours. Its aim is to increase the youngsters activity on the air, strengthening the reputation of the YOTA program and demonstrate the support for youngsters across the world.
The first event will be held on upcoming Saturday, 22nd May 2021 from 0800 to 1959 UTC. We have implemented 8 different categories which also include special ones for youngsters (≤ 25 years old) only. Covering the 80m, 40m, 20m, 15m and 10m bands the competition will take place in CW and SSB modes. The contest exchange used will be the age of the participating operators. Different ages also serve as multipliers during the contest. Contacts between the own continent are worth 1 point, working DX is worth 3 points but the most points will be achieved by working youngsters. The younger the operator the more points one will get for the QSO.

The log deadline is set to 7 days after the event. Once the evaluation of received logs has been completed the various category winners will be awarded with a YOTA Contest plaque.

Over the period 28th April until 11th May 2021, the preparatory work for WRC-23 agenda item 9.1b continued in ITU‑R Working Party 5A (WP5A). An ITU‑R report is under development detailing the technical and operational characteristics of the amateur services use of the band 1240 – 1300 MHz. As usual, the IARU participated in the meeting and delivered key information on the global amateur band plans in this key microwave band and the relationship to the radio navigation satellite services (RNSS) operating co-frequency across the band. This information is vital to ensure the amateur services are realistically represented in the studies as they move forward. For this reason the information was formally made available to ITU‑R Working Party 4C for their consideration as they develop the technical studies.
The work on this topic will continue throughout the year both in ITU‑R and in the regional telecommunications organisations and the IARU is committed to ensure every group hears the amateur position on this important microwave band.
