CW World Heritage Working Group

The IARU Region 1 Virtual General Conference in October 2020 approved the formation of a CW World Heritage Working Group as per proposal NS20_C4_09. More than twenty member societies agreed to their continued support regarding this working group.

Meanwhile an initial virtual meeting took place and attendants agreed to use Groups​.io as a platform for further elaborating the subject. This group acts as gathering discussions and experiences on the “a CW World Heritage” topic. Coordinator of this group is Egbert Hertsen, ON4CAS.

It is the aim of this working group to continue the initiative within IARU Region 1 to get Morse code on different national lists of intangible cultural heritage.

IARU and CEPT WRC-23 Preparations

IARU continued engagement in the WRC-23 preparations in the CEPT RTO during March 2021 at the second meeting of the Conference Preparatory Group Project Team A (CPG PTA). This project team develops the CEPT WRC Briefs for several WRC scientific and regulatory agenda items which are of particular interest to the amateur community. Specific attention is being paid to WRC-23 agenda items 1.12, 1.14 and 9.1a. IARU provided a contribution putting forward the agreed preliminary IARU positions for these agenda items. IARU’s overall objective is to safeguard the allocations to the Amateur and Amateur-Satellite services in the co and adjacent frequency bands within the scope of each agenda item. The CEPT briefs have a specific section in which the views of all the recognised international and regional organisations can be placed and the IARU views are now in this section of the draft briefs for each of these agenda items.

The WRC-23 agenda items in CPG PTA of interest to the IARU

The IARU SRLC continues to be active in PTA and all the CEPT project teams dealing with the WRC preparation. CPG PTA is the group that will also be considering the agenda item proposals to be put forward for WRC-27.

IARU and European Commission meet on WPT-EV

At the request of the European Commission, IARU met on 25 March with representatives of the automotive industry, standards bodies and the Commission to review the current position on the development of an emission standard for Wireless Power Transfer for Electric Vehicles. There was a frank exchange of views, during which IARU made clear the technical basis for its concerns about unwanted emissions from WPT-EV. WPT-EV developers presented their case, based on the tests they had undertaken. After exploring the issues, the Commission determined that further joint tests should be arranged and asked CEN/CENELEC to facilitate these. IARU confirmed it was content to participate and welcomed the initiative, stressing that the tests needed to be conducted in an electrically quiet environment. 

A further meeting will take place once the relevant tests have been completed, with a view to making progress towards an emission standard. In attending the meeting, IARU made clear that it viewed the discussions as being without prejudice to the ongoing work in CEPT, CISPR and ITU on the same topic.

Facing the future of amateur radio

Tonight IARU Region 1 started preparing together with its Member Societies a Workshop with focus on the future of amateur radio. The message being shared in this session is clear. IARU societies are losing members; loss in members in some societies is remarkable in the last ten years, even with good examination throughput. Next to this, persons in leadership roles in these societies are getting older. Not all Member Societies have top team members under the age of 35 years.
The IARU Region 1 Executive Committee shares that it’s time for change and we need to start moving forward. Working together and changing the current trends. We need to refocus our thinking and way of operating.
Main questions and topics which will be covered in the Workshop are:
What is amateur radio today? How is it changing? Where are tomorrow’s radio amateurs? How do others see amateur radio? What do we need to do for the future?
Member societies are called upon to take actively part by nominating people with future oriented mind-set and prepare for this Workshop. Key will be to include new people into the discussion, hoping to reach new ideas and new ways of thinking. The Workshop “Facing the future” is scheduled to be held in October 2021 hopefully in Novi-Sad Serbia, hosted by SRS, the Serbian Amateur Radio Society. A virtual alternative Workshop will be prepared as well.

In this newest episode the team will present the main topic “JOTA – Scouts in Hamradio”. This time we will introduce you to another fantastic aspect of our common hobby – Jamborees On The Air. Join this newest YOTA Online session and listen to our guests live on the show. Furthermore, we will also have a special prize draw after you solved our new riddle live on the show. WHAT IS YOTA ONLINE?
The Youth Working Group within the IARU Region 1 created a new program called “YOTA online”. In these monthly gatherings we will try to bring the YOTA feeling towards the online community and spread the word that there is youth in ham radio. A YOTA team consisting of active youngsters will present different topics, while answering questions from the community. There will also be a section where different recent YOTA event hosts will be able to present the highlights, while also giving participants the opportunity to share stories. These sessions are also interesting if you want to learn more about organizing such amateur radio events for young people. This will be followed by a Q&A session with the group presenting. At the end of the event we will also do a prize raffle including a little riddle amongst all participants.
