Electromagnetic Compatibility — evaluation of the EU Rules

IARU is acutely aware of the concerns of Member Societies and radio amateurs about the threat of increasing levels of noise and harmful interference.

The EC EMCD evaluation process is currently open for Public Consultation. This Public Consultation is an opportunity for IARU Member Societies and individual radio amateurs to let the European Commission have their opinion on the effectiveness of the EMCD.

IARU has already participated in the process since its beginning and has ongoing involvement through PRC as a member of the Commission’s EMC Working Party.

Furthermore there has been significant constructive input to the process from radio amateurs. 

IARU encourages its Member Societies and individual radio amateurs to respond.

International Kids Day event on Saturday, 2nd January 2021

Twice a year, ARRL – the American Radio Society – offers an event designed to promote Amateur Radio to the youth as well as share excitement with your family, grandkids, friends, scouts or even to the public. This day can be the first time for youth to experience a real radio QSO, hopefully they get interested in becoming a licensed amateur radio operator.
You could make use of this suggested exchange: Name, age, location, and favorite color.
Be sure to work the same station again if an operator has changed. To draw attention, call “CQ Kids Day”.

When you want to participate in IARU R1 we suggest you to use the following frequencies:

10 Meters: 28.350 to 28.400 MHz
15 Meters: 21.360 to 21.400 MHz
20 Meters: 14.270 to 14.300 MHz
40 Meters: 7.080 to 7.120 MHz
80 Meters: 3.650 to 3.750 MHz

Saturday, 2nd January 2021 will be the next Kids Day activity. Of course, this one will be a bit different than previous ones. Therefore, we recommend everyone to follow the COVID-19 guidelines in these difficult times. Petrinja Earthquake

An earthquake today at 12:19 UTC has caused severe damage in Petrinja in Croatia. The town is about 50 kilometres from the capital Zagreb. The neighbouring country Slovenia has shut down the Krsko nuclear power plant as a precaution. The earthquake reached a magnitude of 6.4, the epicentre was 46 kilometres southeast of the capital Zagreb, the Seismological Centre for the European Mediterranean reported on Tuesday. Initial reports spoke of major damage. The town of Petrinja, which has about 25,000 inhabitants, was affected. Roofs, facades and entire buildings collapsed, it said.

All services engaged in the earthquake-affected area are reported to be organised and have their own communications.

This earthquake is one of many in recent days and the national society HRS is asking members to be close to their radios and a net is formed on 3.675MHz as well as DMR and repeaters in case any assistance is needed.

Allocation of 630 m and 60 m in OE

Thanks to the constant efforts on the part of the ÖVSV, the Austrian telecommunications authority has announced clearance for the 630 m band and for the 60 m band. The main provisions of the decree are:

The frequency ranges 472.0 — 479.0 kHz and 5351.3 — 5366.5 kHz are allocated for the amateur radio service on a secondary basis according to the Radio Regulations internationally and according to the FNV nationally for use with certain power restrictions to protect other radio services. Transmissions of the secondary radio service must not interfere with other radio services for which the frequency ranges are dedicated and are not themselves entitled to protection against interference.

Radio amateurs in licence class 1 are permitted to use the frequency ranges 472.0 — 479.0 kHz and 5351.3 — 5366.5 kHz in compliance with the provisions and conditions shown in the FNV:

Frequency range: 472.0 — 479.0 kHz
Dedication of the frequency range: secondary
Maximum radiated power: 1 Watt EIRP
Max. Bandwidth of transmission: The provisions of the AFV shall apply mutatis mutandis.

Frequency range: 5351.3 — 5366.5 kHz
Dedication of the frequency range: secondary
Maximum radiated power: 15 watts EIRP
Max. Transmission bandwidth: The provisions of the AFV shall apply mutatis mutandis.
