International Kids Day event on Saturday, 2nd January 2021

Twice a year, ARRL – the American Radio Society – offers an event designed to promote Amateur Radio to the youth as well as share excitement with your family, grandkids, friends, scouts or even to the public. This day can be the first time for youth to experience a real radio QSO, hopefully they get interested in becoming a licensed amateur radio operator.
You could make use of this suggested exchange: Name, age, location, and favorite color.
Be sure to work the same station again if an operator has changed. To draw attention, call “CQ Kids Day”.

When you want to participate in IARU R1 we suggest you to use the following frequencies:

10 Meters: 28.350 to 28.400 MHz
15 Meters: 21.360 to 21.400 MHz
20 Meters: 14.270 to 14.300 MHz
40 Meters: 7.080 to 7.120 MHz
80 Meters: 3.650 to 3.750 MHz

Saturday, 2nd January 2021 will be the next Kids Day activity. Of course, this one will be a bit different than previous ones. Therefore, we recommend everyone to follow the COVID-19 guidelines in these difficult times. Nevertheless, if you are young, close to a radio and do have an amateur radio license, get on the air and share a picture of your activation via social media and tag @hamyota on Twitter and Facebook, @hamyota_official on Instagram or by email to pr@ham-yota.com until Tuesday, 5th January 2021 at 2359 UTC.

We will send out up to 5x original YOTA T‑Shirts in the color you like to persons who shared the coolest Kids Day activity picture(s) with us! Check out our collection at http://www.ham-yota.com/shop/.

Please visit the ARRL homepage for participation awards and further information useful during the upcoming Kids Day activity at http://www.arrl.org/kids-day.

Let us hope we can show Amateur Radio to our friends, family, and other kids during next Kids Day activity again!

IARU represents the amateur service in more discussions on WPT

The meeting of ITU‑R Study Group 1 and its subordinate working parties was held from 24th November until 2nd December. The amateur service has a particular interest in the work done in WP1A on Wireless Power Transmission. Region 1 President Don Beattie, G3BJ and Executive Committee Member Sylvain Azarian, F4GKR, on behalf of IARU, represented the amateur service at the meeting.

IARU had submitted four papers for the WP1A meeting. One was a joint paper with EBU and BBC proposing changes and corrections to ITU‑R Report SM.2449 on Generic WPT devices. A second submission was an information paper relating to the German ENAMS noise measurement system and reporting to ITU that IARU would shortly be in a position to provide data on levels of man-made noise around Germany.

A third paper was a challenge to a US submission which proposed that work on WPT emissions should stop in ITU. The US paper further proposed that if work was continued, it should be towards a Report not a Recommendation.

The final paper from IARU was a proposed set of amendments to report SM.2451 (impact of WPT for electric vehicles) and in particular a detailed critique of a proposed new US Annex to the Report covering the tests carried out in Texas in January 2020 on a pre-production WPT-EV system.

Significant discussion took place on the last two items, resulting in agreement to continue the work on WPT Emissions. Amendments were made to the proposed incorporation of the US Annex into a revised Report 2451, and these will be considered further at the next meeting.

IARU continues to advocate caution on the permitted levels of spurious emissions from WPT-EV systems. IARU’s position was supported by EBU, BBC and a number of administrations.

John Devoldere, ON4UN SK

IARU Region 1 is saddened to receive the news of the death of John Devoldere, ON4UN.

John was a giant in the field of LF DXing and wrote extensively on the subject. He was Chairman of UBA for nearly ten years and with Mark, ON4WW, wrote the much-respected booklet on “Ethics and Operating Procedure for the Radio Amateur”, now hosted on the Region 1 website.
We have all lost a friend and role-model. We send to John’s family our deepest condolences.

Claude, ON7TK, President of UBA writes:
We will remember John as a radio amateur in heart and soul. He was also a special man. It is an incredibly difficult task to put the merits of this man down on paper in a few lines. The various contributions in CQ-QSO on antennas and the various books on Low-band DX-ing will stay with us. It goes without saying that John enjoyed great fame beyond our borders. We are grateful for his contribution to radio amateurism and for his efforts within the UBA. In gratitude for all his work, he was appointed Honorary President of the UBA in 2009.

Within our association John ON4UN was very active. Between 1963 and 1965 he was active as Traffic Manager. John ON4UN was a member of the HF Committee from 1983 to 2016. In 1994 he became Provincial President of East Flanders. Two years later he joined the national board of the UBA. From 1998 to 2007 he became chairman of the UBA. He was at the basis of many reforms within the UBA. After a long career within the UBA, he retired in 2016. However, he was always prepared for good advice. A lot of what we take for granted today would never have been achieved without the help of John ON4UN.

These difficult times do not allow us to attend the funeral service. Marleen Devoldere, John’s daughter, informed us that she is planning a digital farewell ceremony on Saturday 21 November. She will keep us informed about the practical matters. If you would like to send a message, please email ON4UN.SK@gmail.com — John’s old email account is no longer in use. You can also pay John a visit to QRZ.com where he always kept his CV.
