Mexico requests clear frequencies for hurricane response.

The Mexican Federation of Radio Experimenters requests through its Emergency Coordinator, Zian Julio Aguirre Taboada, XE1ATZ, additional protection of the 14 120 kHz frequency, 20 meter band, which they are using in emergency communications in response to damage caused by Hurricane Otis in the state of Guerrero. It should be noted that at 00​:00 UTC on October 27, the SSB CQ WW contest will begin, so colleagues are asked to help so as not to affect these communications.

Summary of frequencies for which protection has been requested:

80m band: 3690 kHz
40m band: 7060 kHz and 7095 kHz
20m band: 14 120 kHz

We appreciate the help of colleagues from all regions in supporting emergency communications in Mexico.

Provisional results IARU R1 50 & 70 MHz SSB/CW Contest

The provisional results for the last 2023 IARU R1 50 MHz SSB/CW Contest held on June 17th/18th are available on the IARU Region 1 VHF & Up Contest Robot.

ITU‑R WP5A meeting #30 could not achieve consensus on the measures needed to protect the RNSS in the 23cm band. (Relating to WRC-23 AI 9.1b)

Working Party 5A meeting #30 met over the period 13th to 22nd September 2023 and despite extra meeting time allocated specifically to the development of the ITU‑R Recommendation M.[AS_GUIDANCE] the meeting did not reach a consensus on the technical and operational measures required to ensure the protection of the RNSS (radio navigation satellite service) in the amateur 23cm band. The measures aim to identify parts of the frequency band with associated amateur transmitter power limits that can help protect the RNSS operations. By the close of the meeting three alternative solutions remained unresolved in the draft document.

This outcome was reported to the WP5A plenary meeting and the subsequent parent Study Group 5 meeting but despite further efforts still no outcome could be achieved. Since the recommendation will be important for WRC-23 discussions it is expected that further efforts will continue to try to find a solution.

On a positive note the Draft New Report ITU‑R M. [AS_CHARACTERISTICS] was finalised by WP5A an approved in Study Group 5.

KOTA Czechia 2023 — Day 3

The Kids On The Air (KOTA) event today had its third and last day held in the Trhanov Castle in Czechia.

The day began with a presentation by Philipp, DK6SP, who shared insights into the possibilities within amateur radio. He told us stories about his travels and showed us how important friendship is in amateur radio.

Before lunch, we got the opportunity to take part in a high-altitude balloon launch, carrying a 20m WSPR beacon as payload.

Over the last two days, we received a step-by-step introduction to contesting. We learned how to do QSOs and had some training in the Off-Air contest. For a final activity, we got to try out our newly gathered skills in a PMR contest, where all participants gathered in the nearby park and got two times 35 minutes to make as many contacts with each other as possible.

The closing ceremony was held in the lecture room, where not only did every participant receive their camp certificate, but the winners of the contests held during the camp got their awards and some presents for the sponsors.
