Promote the International Day of Persons with Disabilities — December 3rd

We invite your member society to participate and to promote the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3rd. This day is a global opportunity to raise awareness and promote inclusivity for individuals with disabilities.

Why is it Important?

International Day of Persons with Disabilities serves as a reminder of the importance of accessibility, equality, and inclusion for all members of society, regardless of their abilities. It’s a day to acknowledge the challenges faced by people with disabilities and celebrate their contributions to our communities.

Key Message:

The theme for this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities is “United in action to rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with and by persons with disabilities”.

Mexico completes hurricane response activities.

The Mexican Federation of Radio Experimenters has communicated through its Emergency Coordinator, Zian Julio Aguirre Taboada, XE1ATZ, as well as Agustín López Guerrero, for the Association of Radio Amateurs of the Mexican Republic that due to the completion of emergency communications related to the effects caused by the hurricane Otis releases the following frequencies for which protection has been requested for regular use.

80m band: 3690 kHz
40m band: 7060 kHz, 7095 and 7120 kHz
20m band: 14120 kHz

We appreciate the support provided by colleagues from various countries and regions to guarantee these emergency communications in Mexico and we congratulate Mexican radio amateurs for the excellent work carried out.

23cm band report ITU‑R M.2532 published.

As a part of the preparatory process for WRC-23 agenda item 9.1 topic b) involving the 23cm band, ITU‑R Report M.2532 has just been published. This report encapsulates the outcome of resolves 1of ITU‑R Resolution 774 that requires a detailed review of the different systems and applications used by the amateur and amateur satellite services in the 23cm band. The review forms a part of the basis for the studies required by resolves 2to address the amateur and amateur satellite services coexistence with the radio navigation satellite service (RNSS).

The publication represents a positive outcome from a great deal of work and committment by the IARU volunteer team that has been central to its development since 2019 in ITU‑R Study Group 5.

26th IARU Region 1 General Conference, 1 – 4 November 2023

The 26th IARU Region 1 General Conference is ongoing at Zlatibor, Serbia, and this year hosted by SRS (Amateur Radio Union of Serbia). Almost 120 delegates, the majority representing the IARU R1 member societies, are taking part in discussions concerning but not limited to C3 (Administration and Organisational Committee), C4 (Permanent HF Committee), C5 (Permanent VHF/UHF/Microwave Committee), C7 (EMC Committee), Youth Working Group and STARS (Support to the Amateur Radio Service). Also, in this conference the future of amateur radio and both IARU will be addressed. More information, including the entire program and conference papers are available.
A special callsign, YT26IARU, is active during the General Conference and will be on air till the end of 2023.

HF Beacon CS3B (Madeira) destroyed in Wildfire

The radio beacon CS3B on the Portuguese island of Madeira was destroyed by fire on 12 October 2023. The picture shows the destroyed radio (ICOM 7200), it had only been installed in September 2023. CS3B was part of the NCDXF’s International Beacon Project (IBP), a series of HF beacons operating on 14,100, 18,110, 21,150, 24,930 and 28,200 kHz. 

The site of CS3B is off the northwest coast of Africa and was an ideal location to test radio propagation on the HF bands to Europe and North America.

The fire damage to the site is quite extensive, as the building that housed the beacon was destroyed, as was the antenna. Given the extensive damage to the beacon and the building, this HF beacon is likely to be out of service for some time.
