IARUMS: New Coordinator and Vice-Coordinator

The new IARUMS Region 1 Coordinator, Gaspar Miró, EA6AMM, appoints Peter Jost, HB9CET, as IARUMS R1 Vice-Coordinator, after receiving his agreement.

Both have been working together in IARUMS for more than a year, an excellent collaboration, as Gaspar emphasizes. He values Peter’s vast knowledge and years of experience with intruder signals on the amateur radio bands — and with the IARUMS. “It is my pleasure to continue to work with him,” says Gaspar.

CAMSAT: CAS-7A launch postponed until May

CAMSAT says the CAS-7A launch has been postponed until next May, as ARRL reports. “Because of COVID-19, many things have been delayed,” says CAMSAT’s Alan Kung, BA1DU. He said an announcement would be made closer to the announced launches.

CAMSAT said last spring that CAS-7A would launch in mid-September; the launch has been postponed multiple times since first announced.

CAS-7A will be placed into a sun-synchronous orbit with an inclination of 98 degrees at 500 kilometers above Earth. The transponders will have a bandwidth of 30 kHz. According to the IARU amateur satellite frequency coordination page, the HF/HF linear transponder will uplink on 15 meters — 21.245 to 21.275 MHz, and downlink on 10 meters — 29.435 to 29.465 MHz. A CW beacon will transmit on 29.425 MHz. The HF/UHF transponder will uplink at 21.3125 to 21.3275 MHz, and downlink at 435.3575 to 435.3725 MHz. A CW beacon for that transponder will transmit on 435.430 MHz.

CAS-7A — Chinese HF Satellite

CAMSAT has announced in spring 2020 the launch of CAS-7A for 15.09.2020. The project was announced several years ago, but has been postponed again and again.

The special thing about CAS-7A is that HF is used with two transponders. The transponder configuration of the Chinese satellites is similar to that of the Russian RS satellites of that time. A sun-synchronous orbit with an inclination of 98° is planned. The orbit height shall be 500 km. The transponders have a bandwidth of 30 kHz and the frequencies were coordinated by IARU [1]:

HF linear transponder:

uplink: 21.245 — 21.275 kHz
Downlink: 29,435 — 21,465 kHz
CW beacon: 29.425 kHz

HF/UHF transponder:

Uplink: 21.3125 — 21.3275 kHz
Downlink: 435,3575 — 435,3725 kHZ
CW beacon: 435.430 kHz

HF Digital Mode Band Plan Review

“The explosive growth in HF digital modes, particularly FT8, has led to perceived overcrowding of HF digital mode band segments. Accordingly, a working group has been formed consisting of representatives of the three regional band planning committees. This is the first time the three Regions have joined together to directly coordinate band planning efforts…”.
